Acoustic guitar

The acoustic guitar does not need an amplifier to make it heard as the guitar's body acts as a resonator. One of the best things about the acoustic guitar is that you can take it anywhere and instantly play - no other equipment needed - making it ideal for singer-songwriters.

Below are some of the traits of an acoustic guitar:

  • It has a narrow neck, like an electric guitar

  • It has thick strings, thicker than those on an electric guitar

  • An acoustic guitar has a larger and wider body than an electric or a classical guitar

  • Acoustic guitar players can play with a pick or their fingers

  • Acoustic guitars can sometimes have a pickup inside them which means the guitar can be plugged into an amplifier like an electric guitar. These are called 'electro acoustics'.

WHAT’S IT LIKE LEARNING acoustic guitar AT TOBY’S MUSIC LESSONS?

Toby’s Music Lessons aims to give you everything you need to become a better, more rounded guitar player:

SONGS

Learning your favourite songs is a key part of Toby’s Music Lessons, after all, the best part of learning to play the guitar is to be able to play your favourite songs! For every song you will always get a printed-out transcription and two mp3s, one full speed and one slowed by 20%. Once you have mastered the song, you will have the opportunity to record it and receive your own mp3!

Jamming is a key component in any guitarist’s toolkit. Part of every lesson is dedicated to jamming and during these jams you’ll be learning how to master chord changes and how to improvise solos over different styles of music.

GENERAL MUSICIANSHIP

This is everything to do with the guitar that isn’t covered by techniques and songs, such as brands of guitars and amps, pedals, string changing and maintenance, case studies on the top acoustic guitarists and session guitar players, cultures surrounding different genres of music and new products and trends that come out. Learning about this is sure to inspire you and deepen your knowledge of the guitar.
