I worked with some local music school teachers but was not overly happy with them. I still do look at online teachers like JustinGuitar and ZeroToHero. But ultimately I wanted to be able to get a bespoke lesson plan for me to achieve my goals and be able to ask very particular questions and have them answered without trawling the internet for an answer and Toby has done this.

electric guitar

First invented in the 1950s, the electric guitar has since become an iconic staple of popular music.

The electric guitar relies on pickups and an amplifier to make it heard. Its body is thinner than classical and acoustic guitars, but heavier.

Some traits of the electric guitar are:

  • Electric guitars are smaller than classical or acoustic guitars, but they are heavier.

  • Electric guitars use pickups to amplify the sound.

  • Electric guitars use nickel strings which have a lower tension than acoustic guitar strings meaning you can play and bend strings more easily.

  • An electric guitar is very quiet when not plugged into an amplifier, but it can still be heard.

  • Electric guitars usually have tone controls and pickup selector switches to change the timbre of the sound going to the amplifier.

GENERAL MUSICIANSHIP

This is everything to do with the guitar that isn’t covered by techniques and songs, such as brands of guitars and amps, pedals, string changing and maintenance, case studies on the top bands and session guitar players, cultures surrounding different genres of music and new products and trends that come out.
